Villarreal 1-1 Arsenal

Fantastic result, really. In a Champions League quarter-final away leg, a goal is like a precious gem.

A couple of very brief points as I’m running low on the critical blogging factor of time this morning:

– Nobody will underestimate Villarreal in the second leg. We looked largely average in the first half and part of that was down to their closing down, their ball retention and the quality of their football in general.

– Adebayor’s goal was absolutely stunning and I doubt he will ever pull such a technically difficult goal out of the hat again. More importantly, it puts us in a very good position to advance. He really struggled with service last night but battled hard (despite being Offsidebayor about 10 times) and his return to fitness has been timely indeed.

– If Gallas has done the medial ligaments in his knee then his season is over. How damaging that might be with a packed April schedule I can only guess at.

– Football appears to be less of a contact sport in Spain. The amount of times their players toppled over at the faintest whiff of contact needs to be taken into account for the return leg.

– I can’t wait for the second leg.

Right, I must off. Enjoy that battling result (and just forget about the first half…)

Arsenal since about 1979. Thick, thin and all that.
